Through A Glass Darkly, 2020

 Of all the genres of classic cinema that I have incorporated into my work, probably the most consequential has been film noir. I cut my teeth sketching vintage film stills from the library. With its atmospheric tension and hard-boiled glitz, this brooding style of visual story telling taught me everything I know about composition, light and narrative. I was particularly intrigued by what the absence of light could convey. One carefully placed shadow over the left eye could communicate a secret. A shadow over both eyes seemed to suggest a burden. This solo exhibition opened in Los Angeles at Corey Helford Gallery during one of the Covid lockdowns and I was unable to attend. The title, Through A Glass Darkly, was chosen for its impressions of both a shadowy lens and a mirror.
