Skinwalker, 2018
This solo exhibition opened in LA in 2018. Animal familiars have often been references in my work. In this series, they were more viscerally integrated. Around the time of this series, I was using special ball-jointed figures as models, sculpted by Russian artists like The Popovy Sisters and Pasha Setrova. They served as reference models for this series. The physical attributes of these dolls were highly stylized and elongated. This, combined with my similar tendency to elongate everything, made my paintings almost resemble Japanese anime as they twisted and morphed into otherworldly creatures. The theme was inspired by the Navajo stories of shape shifting witches.
