Skinwalker, 2018

This solo exhibition opened in LA in 2018. Animals have often been references in my work. Mostly as a tool to punctuate the character’s intent or state of mind. In this series, the animal familiar and the figures were more thoroughly integrated. Around the time of this series, I was inspired by ball-jointed dolls, sculpted by Russian artists like The Popovy Sisters and Pasha Setrova. They served as reference models for this series. The physical attributes of these dolls were highly stylized and elongated, which made my paintings look almost like Japanese anime as they twisted and morphed into otherworldly creatures. This theme was inspired by the Navajo stories of shape shifting witches.
