Through A Glass Darkly, 2020
Of all the elements that have been incorporated into my work, probably the most consequential has been film noir. I learned how to draw from sketching vintage film stills from the library. I loved the atmospheric tension and hard-boiled glitz of that particular era of American cinema. This brooding style of visual story telling taught me everything I know about composition, light and narrative. I was particularly intrigued by what the absence of light on a figure could suggest. One carefully placed shadow over the left eye could communicate a secret. A shadow over both eyes might indicate a burden. This solo exhibition opened in Los Angeles at Corey Helford Gallery during one of the worst of the Covid lockdowns and I was unable to attend. I was crushed because this remains my favourite series and very few people saw these pieces in person. Through A Glass Darkly opened August 22, 2020. Keeping in mind that so much of my work is like putting myself in a movie, I chose the title “Through A Glass Darkly,” because I felt it combined those two ideas of the shadowy lens of a film camera and a mirror.
